Classical marble quarries of Athens are situated in the East of Athens (6.5 km). Penteli marble is easy to split, property that facilitates the extraction of boulders. This becomes quite apparent during processing of the rock. It is fine-grained, it has thin sub-sugar-like web and great consistency, normal tensile strength and it may be easily polished. It is white, of high purity without mottling and scattered veins. When Penteli marble is exposed to atmospheric agents, a gold surface coating is created, which makes statues and monuments made from this marble particularly imposing.
