Culture

Alentejo cultural heritage is easily noticed all over territory, and can be seen in archaeological sites, castles, churches, ancient mines, museums, and small villages, with its typical buildings reflecting the diversity of cultural influences that marked this region through the times.

The clay, the cork, rattan sticks, the wood, the wool and linen are transformed in handicraft works that reflect the collective memories. Also popular and religious festivals also keep these memories alive and all the villages prepare to this special events.

But Alentejo cannot be culturally defined without refer to it’s wines and specific gastronomy with it’s clear and distinct tastes and flavours that surely will mark each and everyone who try’s them.

Additionally it is worth noting the very recent news of distinction of "Cante Alentejano" (the characteristic vocal song from Alentejo) as intangible cultural heritage of humanity that can be listened in local taverns and restaurants or even in public places.
