The Shades of Marble Route - 3 days itinerary - Sousel, Estremoz, Borba, Vila Viçosa – Redondo - Mourão - Alqueva

Introduction to the itinerary
Be in the vast Alentejo’s “montado” (the unique cork tree forest), in the picturesque rural houses or in the monumental regional architecture, one common element dominates the landscape and gives it a unique and extraordinary beauty - the marble.
This 3-day route offers you a rich and diversified experience, which brings perfectly together the five sides of the material and immaterial heritage: industrial, historical, cultural, gastronomy and the landscape, representing a memento of Alentejo. It takes you over the lands of marble trough history, landscapes and flavours, showing you a world that will be preserved in our memories.
The Shades of Marble Route is an invitation to meet the eccentric universe, wild and deeply mysterious, of the marble in Alentejo.The following itinerary is available for groups all year round. Meeting and departure point organized in accordance to group interest. Schedule can be adjusted to groups' interest and availability. Weather limitations may occur regarding outdoor visits to quarries.
DAY 1 (Sousel – Estremoz)
Beginning in the northern part of Estremoz anticlinal, in Sousel, visiting the gravel factory and enjoying a relaxing walk to the amazing “Lime Ovens”. We’re now leaving to Estremoz, where we’ll devote the rest of the day to visit its historical centre, some of the most iconic monuments, traditional shops and some of its culinary benchmarks. To finish the day, you’ll have the pleasure to spend the night in the marvelous Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel, a perfectly spotted historical building actually integrating an high quality hotel.

DAY 2 (Borba - Vila Viçosa)
On the second day, we will head up to Borba, and start a fulfilling day visiting monuments where marble and history combine to tell us stories from people and land. Then we will move forward to Vila Viçosa, the lands of the Dukes of Bragança, where an amazing meal will be served at the Taberna dos Conjurados, followed by a visit to The Marble Museum and local monuments. The day will finish with a climb to the Mouro quarry, which offers a privileged viewpoint to take pictures of the Estremoz Anticline, followed by a recovering night in the Solar dos Mascarenhas.

DAY 3 (Sousel - Estremoz)
The last day is dedicated to get to know a bit more of Alentejo region, its landscape and people. In the morning a guided tour in Redondo village and visit the Wine museum will be provided, followed by a perfect gastronomic experience where regional wines are combined with food in the Redondo Enoteca. Traveling trough this peaceful region you will visit the Mourão castle and enjoy a boat tour in the biggest artificial lake of Europe. By the end of the day we’ll be heading Amieira Marina, where a Boat House is waiting for you. The best way for spending the last night, on a very modern and confortable boat, under an amazing sky, full of stars!

The Route and all its itineraries can be enjoyed by all kinds of groups. Although, considering some of the activities related to the visiting of quarries, safety restrictions may apply to certain groups or ages.
