The Shades of Marble Route - 2 days itinerary - Vila Viçosa, Borba, Estremoz and Sousel

This itinerary can be implemented with the support of Spira - Revitalizacao Patrimonial.

Be in the vast Alentejo’s “montado” (the unique cork tree forest), in the picturesque rural houses or in the monumental regional architecture, one common element dominates the landscape and gives it a unique and extraordinary beauty - the marble.

This two-day Route spread across four municipalities of undeniable beauty, settled in the heart of the famous “Estremoz Anticline”, where you’ll have the privilege of getting to know all about the path that goes from the extraction, through the processing and manufacturing, to the application of the marble in masterpieces.

At the quarries you’ll be able to see first-hand how skilled the workers handle sophisticated machinery to extract huge blocks of marble, which is then forwarded to the plants where it will be cut, polished and processed into its final shapes, textures and sizes. Alentejo’s marble is showcased in a natural and eccentric way by visiting extraordinary examples of marble application in flagship monuments of the territory.

These days are culturally so full that you’re bound to lose some calories. What better way to get them back than to enjoy each of the four meals we’ve planned for you. You’ll be able to sample traditional dishes as well local wines and liqueurs. Can you resist these temptations? Oh, yes, in case you like sweets and deserts, you’ll be in heaven!

The Shades of Marble Route is therefore an invitation to meet the eccentric universe, wild and deeply mysterious, of the marble in Alentejo.
